Following in the footsteps of fan creations like Pokémon Reorchestrated and Twilight Symphony, Nintendo fan Blake Robinson has put his best efforts forward to create Super Metroid Symphony, which takes 60 minutes of music from the SNES classic Super Metroid and beefs it up with a fantastic orchestral sound. Super Metroid Symphony is available on iTunes and Loudr, and while the album preview can be found alongside several other wonderful orchestrations on his YouTube channel, the full product of Blake Robinson's efforts can be purchased for just $9.99.

Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2013 is in full swing, and at their keynote earlier today Kojima Productions had a treat for Metal Gear Solid fans. Above is the announcement trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, which I will let speak for itself. Which consoles the title is coming to is yet to be announced, but expect more news soon.


Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity launched just a few days ago, but unfortunately, it was overshadowed by the simultaneous release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Mystery Dungeon is still getting some love, however, in the form of the above cartoon uploaded by Nintendo to their YouTube channel. It chronicles the first moments in the adventures of Pikachu and Oshawott in their quest to build a happier world. You can watch the first episode above, and the rest can be found on Nintendo's YouTube channel in the coming days.

The day is finally upon us, you can now go out and buy BioShock Infinite to meet your heart's desire; the skies of Columbia are no yours to traverse. Still questioning whether or not you should pick yourself up a copy of the third BioShock game? Perhaps this launch trailer will help convince you otherwise. Infinite has been met with superb reviews so far, and the high scores just keep rolling in, so be sure to check it out!

Excited for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag? It's alright not to be, we did just get ACIII nearly half a year ago. But Black Flag surely is doing its best to expand upon its gameplay by letting players take to the seas to not only wage war against other ships, but to search the ocean floors for treasure and battle sharks. The trailer also shows the on-land portions of the game and the forests/jungles the players can traverse are simply stunning, looking lush and vibrant from all angles. It may not divulge much upon the story of Black Flag, but it's bound to at least garner your interest so be sure to check it out!

I am a massive Star Fox fan, especially Star Fox 64. The above cinematic masterpiece is probably one of the best fan made products I have seen in my lifetime. It also contains a nice track from Star Trek, which is used almost to perfection. Joe Morrisseaum one of the main people behind this flick, sat down with Nintendo Life to talk about the process. One of the interesting tidbits is how long it took to make this - 20 hours a week every week for a full year. Yikes. What's neat though is he has an idea swimming in his head for another short based on The Legend of Zelda.

Despite its shortcomings in the last few years, the Virtual Console has always been a great service for which we Nintendo fans should be very grateful. It remains, however, an incredible opportunity for Nintendo to expand and prove their prowess in the online market with a touch of inspiration and a lot of drive to pull through. One particular area in which the Virtual Console can expand is its interface—right now, gamers simply choose a retro game from the regular menu and boot it up, but why not have a full menu for all Virtual Console titles? Wouldn't you like to own a true virtual library of games?

One particular Nintendo fan has created a vivid display of his ideal Virtual Console menu and I must say, I couldn't agree with it more. Head to around 1:37 in the video above to see the wonderful display of creativity. While a decision like this would likely boost Virtual Console sales due to better ease of access and a more enjoyable experience all around, I'm going to take a leap and say an offering like this should be expanded to all digital titles, Virtual Console included.

It's no secret that the modern gaming market is a lot less stable than it was a few years ago. I was hoping to write a lengthy editorial on this very subject, but the brilliant minds at CleverNoobs have just done so in video form! This feature takes an in-depth look at the gaming crash of 1983 and the parallels between it and today. Discussing the effects of DLC, online gaming, and retooling old games, CleverNoobs explains why the current market is in a state of upset and what we can all do to try to avoid it—and even why a crash may ultimately be a good thing. CleverNoobs has done a wonderful job at explaining the state of the industry, and as educated gamers, this is an essential video to watch.


Pandora's Tower is the third and final game highlighted by the Operation Rainfall movement, all three of which were released to huge success in Japan while having little to no chance of localization. After testing the waters with Xenoblade Chronicles and further fanservice with The Last Story, Pandora's Tower is finally being released to western audiences. In fact, some locations have already gotten their hands on it. Knowing very little about the game, this trailer has already convinced me to cave—the visuals, the music, the voice acting, and more are absolutely stunning, and the plot and themes are no child's turf.

Even if you have no interest in Pandora's Tower, I strongly recommend you give the trailer a watch. It's very powerful and only takes two minutes of your time—and who knows, maybe it will convince you to buy a great new game.

Michael Pachter is known, as he acknowledges in this video, to have a pretty poor reputation with Nintendo fans but he isn't going to back down because of it. Pachter is always going to speak his mind, and yes, as some point out, ignore some key questions such as the 3DS' success in Japan. He does have a few good points covered in his latest Pach Attack however. 

For starters, Nintendo would definitely sell more software units in truck loads if they didn't restrict to their own hardware. They could dominate the mobile smart-device market and would easily have some of the best selling software every single time on the competitors consoles. He feels Nintendo won't leave the hardware business even if it's not very profitable because it's what they have always done. They will continue to do it, and he admits they can afford to continue to do it for 50+ years if they want.

With Iwata being a bad CEO, it comes down to the decisions the last two years. There are some counter arguments of course to the claim that he's a bad CEO. Take the peak all-time high of Nintendo's stock - that also happened under Iwata's watch. It also was inevitably going to crash because that's the nature of the game business. It's true Nintendo probably doesn't make that much profit off their hardware - but they are notorious for keeping a price on a product for several years. Wii U will probably sit around $300 USD for at least 3 or 4 years before they slice it. While some of you may feel that's a bad decision, if the console is selling well there is no reason to drop it. This also ignores how Nintendo fundamentally feels the focus of the industry is on the wrong aspects, and they stick with their hardware to prove that point. Without Nintendo hardware, you would lose a lot of innovations. 

Anita Sarkeesian is attempting to tackle a rather prolific topic: Woman in video games. The above video is part 1 of massive series of videos she will be putting on on the topic to reach her ultimate conclusion. The video project was funded via Kickstarter and so far, so good in my book. The above video touches upon a common trope used not just in games but in all areas of the media. Sure, it hurts at times seeing Miyamoto thrown out there as one of the godfather's of this movement in games, but it's not far from the truth.

I think it's nice too where she says she too grew up on these same games and she enjoys playing them, so it's not like this topic is necessarily about the games design. This topic is strictly about how woman are depicted in gaming. We gladly look forward to the next part in the series. It's a very touchy topic, but I think she has done a good job touching base on it so far. Oh, and for those that want to mention how in Double Dragon she helps beat the boss in the end - so does Zelda, it doesn't mean she's not a damsel in distress.


Many of you readers may remember Cryamore, an indie game developed by a team of well-versed developers who took to Kickstarter to fund their project. After requiring only $60,000, the team ended up  with $242k, which means fans will see many new items, features, and most importantly, the game will be released on all home consoles.

But what exactly is Cryamore? The Kickstarter page has the answer.

"Imagine the barebones gameplay of Zelda, mixed with atmospheric elements from Metroid, action done in the style of Secret of Mana, the excitement of figuring out what element to use like Megaman, hand-drawn storybook backdrops like Legend of Mana, with comedic tones and a thriving in-game clock system like Brave Fencer Musashi; that's Cryamore in a nutshell."

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies is the upcoming installment Professor Layton series, a popular brand of puzzle-adventure titles for Nintendo's handheld consoles. Following the events of last year's Miracle Mask, Azran Legacies will be the final Professor Layton title to feature Professor Layton himself as the protagonist. Azran Legacies was shown a few days ago via Nintendo Direct, and thanks to Siliconera, we now have a better understanding of the title. Head past the jump to read all about it!


Castlevania: Lord of Shadow — Mirror of Fate is the upcoming 3DS entry in Konami's Castlevania franchise. Mirror of Fate has consistently shown us trailers displaying strong gameplay, but now we see a story trailer to go along with it. This trailer shows us the motivations of Simon Belmont, the hero of the original Castlevania, in pursuit of his missing father.

The video shows that the game features full voice acting which is none too shabby. Unfortunately, the cinematics accompanying much of it seems to drag the experience down. The trailer concludes with another display of the Lords of Shadow gameplay, ensuring us once again that it will be a fun experience. Most of this video is really hit-or-miss for me, but what do you think of the new story trailer?


Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is coming to North American 3DS owners in later March. To prepare consumers for its release, Nintendo has decided to produce a TV commercial for the game to spread its name and hopefully increase sales. Following a commercial for Fire Emblem Awakening, it's wonderful to see that Nintendo has taken a fancy to creating commercials again, as I fondly remember them doing when I was growing up, and without a single drop of charm lost. A tip of the hat to you, old friend. Keep the good times coming.
