Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, is perhaps one of the most widely-recognized faces in gaming—at least in North America. He's made several appearances at major events, spawned a few memes, including the famous line "my body is ready," and he's got a great connection with the public. At the recent #ImWithReggie "TweetUp," Reggie met with fans in person and answered questions from Twitter, even addressing an issue we hadn't heard about in a while.
A while back, Reggie said that he "wouldn't mind" making an appearance as a playable character in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, leading fans to petition Sakurai, the games' director, for his inclusion. At last night's TweetUp, Reggie said that Sakurai would consider adding him to Super Smash Bros. if 100,000 people signed "the petition."
Before anyone gets too excited, he was probably just kidding around. Former Editor-In-Chief of Bulbagarden Holly Bowen, who attended the TweetUp and broke the news about Reggie's claim, has since made several tweets along the lines of "I suspect Reggie was joking," and "internet petitions don't mean anything." She also supported a NeoGAF user who elegantly points out, "You guys are signing an internet petition based on a random person's tweet about an offhand joke that Sakurai might put the president of NoA in Smash in the middle of the game's development."
Nonetheless, if you're still holding out hope that Reggie will be playable in Super Smash Bros., go ahead and sign the petition! It couldn't hurt. And be prepared to ache when Master Troll Sakurai announces that Reggie will be included as one of the several collectible trophies. Mwahaha.
