I know, I know, everyone's freaking out because the inauguration is just two days away, and everything's on fire, and 2016 never really ended because the passage from one unit of time to the next has no bearing on the course of human events. I get it. But let me take your mind off it for just a moment, and then I'll let you get right back to the existential dread.

I've been excited this week, because I like video games. And Nintendo just announced something magical. Head inside to keep reading.

You can use it when you win. You can use it when you lose. You can use it every time your moron teammates run out of the spawn point one by one, die within seconds, and never capture the objective even once during the whole match. The image is pretty huge, so to save space I've included it after the jump.

"Welcome to the world of Pokémon," I heard. In truth I deciphered these words from a few crude pixels on a strangely-upscaled Game Boy Advance screen, but to the little boy playing Pokémon Gold Version for the first time, they meant something. I was no longer sitting on my blue-striped couch trying desperately to find the right balance of soft light and harsh glare from the lamp above to illuminate the screen. These words and the three square waves accompanying them had served their purpose so well that they transcended their very existence. They were my transports to Johto, the world of Pokémon, and Professor Oak made sure I felt welcome.

 

Mario's become one of the most famous faces in modern media, and it's undeniable that he's the biggest star in the gaming world. Naturally, a figure with that kind of status is going to be the star of dozens of great games, but how do you tell which ones are the best of the best? Well, that's a question that's hard to answer, but below, you'll find my personal top five favorite  Mario spinoffs, and be sure to share yours inside!
