Hideo Kojima has made some big progress in his time away from Konami by starting up a new gaming studio and collaborating again with Norman Reedus and Guillermo del Toro to create his new title Death Stranding. By now, Kojima has been very clear that he did not leave Konami on good terms. Sitting down with BBC Newsbeat and IGN, he talked about his time with the company and how much more freedom he now has with Kojima Productions.

When talking to IGN, he noted that all of the experiences he's had as a creator up to this point has served a purpose, even his time at Konami. Regardless of how the relationship with the gaming publisher ended, Kojima seems to be very proud of the work he put in:

"The me that stands here now is the product of the past 53 years of my life. Everything I experienced over 53 years; movies I've seen, books I've read, music I've listened to, games I've played, people I've met and the 30 years spent in this industry, have formed who I am. Not one of these things has been without purpose, including my experience creating games at Konami.

"I'm embarking on a new challenge with a fresh slate, but I intend to keep pushing the creative envelope until the day I die. I believe my experiences over the past 53 years won't lead me astray." — Hideo Kojima

On the topic of Death Stranding and Kojima Productions, he compared the situation to a popular band that changes up their musical style. Since the company doesn't exist in the stock market, he doesn't have to please investors and has way more creative freedom than he's ever had before. Alluding back to the band analogy, he said his current followers might not like his next project, but that just leaves room to bring in new fans.

Kojima added that Death Stranding will be unlike most games people have played. The goal of the game is to incorporate multiple elements from different types of media together; if Kojima Productions just "make[s] a game," it may not stand the test of time and will be forgotten rather quickly.

"In life, people are very busy doing lots of things. The time you have to choose what media or entertainment you experience is dwindling. More and more people are looking at types of media that combine elements together.

"If we just make a game people are less likely to choose that as something to do. They would rather engage in something that combines different forms of entertainment together. That's where we need to focus our efforts, on this convergence." — Hideo Kojima
