Nintendo has been one of the most popular and celebrated video game developers in the world since the 1980s, but the company has a history that stretches back well over a century. Nintendo was originally founded as a playing card company on September 23rd, 1889. Taking time zone differences into account, The Big N is officially 127 years old today.

Nintendo may have had humble beginnings, but the late Hiroshi Yamauchi had greater ambitions for his company during his time as President. Over the years, Yamauchi transformed Nintendo from a playing card company into a toy company, and eventually it became the beloved video game creator and household name that it is today. Happy birthday, Nintendo, and thanks for all the fun times!
