On May 24th, 2016, the gaming community became enthralled by a little game called Overwatch. Now, tens of millions of players and many awards later, Blizzard is taking some time to celebrate the game's one year anniversary. Rumors have been circulating for a few weeks now that this celebration would take the form of an in-game event, plus the launch of a Game of the Year Edition, though these are rumors no more.
Starting Tuesday, May 23rd, a digital "Game of the Year Edition" will be available for purchase on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This edition will replace the currently available Origins Edition and includes the following:
- 10 Loot Boxes
- Vintage Blackwatch Reyes, Strike-Commander Morrison, Overgrown Bastion, Security Chief Phara, and Slipstream Tracer skins
- Tracer for Heroes of the Storm
- Baby Winston pet for World of Warcraft
- Mercy's wings for Diablo III
- Tracer, Reaper, Pharah, Winston, Bastion, and Soldier: 76, portraits for StarCraft II
- Overwatch-themed card back for Hearthstone
With the exception of the Loot Boxes, everything in this pack is offered through the Origins Edition. It is unknown at this time how much the Game of the Year Edition will cost.
The celebration doesn't stop there, however. Also starting May 23rd, there will be an in-game Anniversary event. Specific details about what is included in this event haven't been released, but we do know that it will end on Monday, June 12th. In addition, from May 26th-May 29th, Blizzard is hosting a free weekend, so if you haven't gotten Overwatch yet but want to try it, you'll have a few days to play. Playing during this time frame gives you access to the full game, including the ability to level up and unlock customization items, all of which will transfer over to a purchased copy after the weekend ends.
As we approach the anniversary, we should take a moment to reflect on some of our favorite Overwatch moments. What's your favorite play of the game? Who's your favorite hero? What does Overwatch mean to you? Let us know below!
