After a long string of leaks, it's finally confirmed: Ryu is joining the battle in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. During today's Smash Bros. presentation, Mr. Sakurai explained that the fighting game vet has received a lot of development attention, taking into account the playstyles and combo inputs of his home franchise, and as a result he's a great character for experienced Street Fighter players.

Ryu's got a ton of different attack options. You can use three different power tiers for his standard attacks depending on how long you hold down the attack button. You can also input classic Street Fighter combo inputs for his special moves. In some cases, this will increase their power – for example, his Shoryuken recovery move will deal more damage if you use combo inputs. His counter move, which allows you to stun an enemy, can have its animation cancelled after it connects so you can quickly attack.

He'll also have two Final Smashes: Shin Shoryuken will activate at close range, and Shinku Hadoken will activate at a distance.

Ryu will come with a new stage – Suzaku Castle – on both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions. You can pick up Ryu and his stage for $5.99 on one platform, and $6.99 for both together. His remix theme for the new stage is done by Yoko Shimomura, sound composer for Street Fighter II.

Ryu's DLC is out right now, so if you're a Smash/Street Fighter fan, you can check out how he plays right away. An Amiibo will be released down the line, with no specific release timing announced yet.
