It seems like SEGA has been a little unsure of what to do with the Sonic franchise ever since the '90s, which is why they opted for a return to form with last year's Sonic Mania. The result was a nostalgic adventure that quickly became one of the most critically acclaimed Sonic games in decades. Less than a year later, it has also eclipsed a significant sales milestone.

According to a recent article in popular Japanese publication Famitsu (featuring Sonic producer Takashi Iizuka), Sonic Mania has officially sold over 1 million copies worldwide. While that's a significant number, it's not exactly a mega-hit. That said, Mania has only been available as a digital title thus far, and it will certainly see a sizable sales boost from its physical release as the new and improved Sonic Mania Plus.
