Nintendo Switch support has been picking up among third-party developers thanks to its incredible first year sales numbers. Square Enix is among those showing their support with the upcoming RPG Octopath Traveler, which launches on July 13th. As it turns out, Octopath is just the start of what should be a beautiful relationship between Nintendo and Square Enix on Switch.
Speaking with Game Informer, Square Enix executive and producer Tomoya Asano revealed that the team working on Octopath became an official division within Square Enix back in April. The purpose of this new team? Developing games for Nintendo Switch.
"Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch. If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler. There are several other titles that we're currently working on for Switch. If you could just wait a bit longer, we'll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future." — Tomoya Asano
Square Enix already has "several" games in the works for Switch, and if Octopath is successful, that Switch support will only grow stronger. Asano couldn't share any other details about the types of games that are currently in development for Switch. It's possible that we'll see something announce at E3, but the mystery titles may also still be too early in development for that.
