Back at E3, Square Enix announced that a new entry from the Nier franchise was being created by Platinum Games for the PlayStation 4, and during Paris Games Week they revealed many new details about the sequel, including its full name: Nier: Automata. Screenshots (found in the gallery below), the above gameplay trailer with absolutely gorgeous music, and some basic story details were provided as well.

Nier: Automata will put players into the shoes of an android fighter with a "comparatively cold and level headed personality" who is tasked with liberating Earth after an alien invasion forced humanity to flee to the moon. Though it is a sequel to the original Nier, with a shared setting and several returning characters, players will not need any knowledge of the original's storyline to understand the tale of Automata.

Aside from its breathtaking music – which comes from the same composer as the original Nier, Keiichi Okabe – the trailer above also showcases multiple combat sequences from the new game, but Square Enix's Dan Seto was quick to reassure players that this is not simply an Action title.

"Nier: Automata is the next game in the Nier franchise and it’s a collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames. You probably recognize PlatinumGames’ distinct action style in the gameplay trailer but if you look closely, you’ll be able to spot gameplay elements from the original Nier as well. It’s still an action RPG so don’t worry if you want more RPG mechanics in the game, they’re still there!" — Square Enix

As one might guess after watching the beautiful fluidity of the combat in the trailer, it was confirmed at the conference that the game will run at 60fps.

Are you excited for Nier: Automata? Has the trailer's music blown you away as much as it did me? Let us know your thoughts on all this in the comments!
