Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot box-based progression system has been controversial since before the game's launch, with many claiming that they limited progression and made the game a "pay-to-win" experience. EA quickly moved to fix this by removing the ability to purchase them with real-world currency, which left the progression system reliant on loot boxes unlocked through level-ups and did not fix the underlying problem. In a new update to the game coming on March 21st, EA will be taking further steps to fix the issue by removing Star Cards from loot boxes entirely.

After the update, Star Wars Battlefront 2 will have a linear progression system that awards Skill Points to players who earn enough experience points by using the classes, heroes, and ships that they choose; these Skill Points can then be used to unlock or upgrade Star Cards. EA has assured players that they will be able to keep any Star Cards that they earned through the previous system, regardless of how much or how little progress was made.

Loot boxes will still be in the game, but they will only be given as rewards for logging in daily and other milestones and will only contain Credits and other "cosmetic" items, such as emotes and victory poses. These loot boxes will not contain costumes (or "appearances" as they're called in-game), which will instead be available to buy using Credits earned in-game or purchased Crystals starting in early April.
