Games Done Quick (GDQ) events have been famous for pitting speedrunners against some great games, all in the name of charity. Due to its nature as a favorite of many speedrunners, Super Metroid has often been featured in GDQ events, sometimes as the final game to be played. For the upcoming Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) event, however, the classic SNES title is not going to make an appearance at all, something many gamers have vented frustrations about since the official game list for AGDQ 2018 was released.

Super Metroid not making an appearance is a first for GDQ events. Though it's only speculation at this point, the reason for this appears to be that sometimes speedrunners die mid-run and must start the entire game over, which can throw the entire schedule out of whack and waste a lot time for the streams. This happened to two of the three speedrunners attempting to race through the run during this past Summer Games Done Quick event, and it was a bit of a let-down to see them both have to bow out afterwards. That being said, it is still somewhat of a shame the game is not being played for AGDQ 2018. The question of whether to save or kill the animals in the "Escape from Zebes" sequence usually does well for the charities being funded.

Speedrunners and the GDQ crew will be raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation at AGDQ 2018, which will be hosted from Herndon, Virginia from January 7-14th.
