It's been 25 years since the critically panned Super Mario Bros. movie from the '90s, and Nintendo is finally getting ready to give their most iconic character a second shot at the big screen. Nintendo announced early this year that they've teamed up with Illumination to bring the movie to life, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is calling the shots to make sure it's true to his vision.

So when we can we expect to see this all come to fruition? We don't yet have a hard release date, and probably won't for quite some time, but Illumination has a broad window in mind. According to founder Chris Meledandri, the film is in "priority development" at Illumination, which is no surprise given what a massive intellectual property Mario is. It sounds like development is still in the early stages, but Illumination is aiming to have it out by 2022 or before, if possible.

This movie will mark another step in Nintendo's plans to diversify and establish themselves in the public eye as an entertainment company. They're also aiming to open up their first theme park by 2020, and they have plans for more in the coming years. It's a whole new era for Nintendo, and they're not content with the video game market alone anymore.
