Nintendo shocked fans and gamers everywhere by reviving the Nintendo World Championships (for the first time since the original 1990 event) back in 2015 as part of their presence at E3. Nintendo of America seems to like these surprises, as they've now announced that the third Nintendo World Championships are scheduled to run live on October 7, 2017 in New York City, with anyone in the United States and Canada eligible to quality.

Qualifiers for the competition begin this Saturday, August 19th, at eight separate Best Buy stores in the United States. Residents of the U.S. and Canada are eligible to compete, and anyone interested in trying out for the championships should visit one of the eight cities' stores linked here.

Participants in both age groups (12 years of age and younger, or 13 years of age and older) will have their gaming skills tested by playing Mario Kart 7 in time trial mode with specifications for each race. Those interested in the event will also be able to demo upcoming Nintendo titles: Super Mario Odyssey and Metroid: Samus Returns.

The 2017 Nintendo World Championships will be broadcasted on October 7th from the Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom in New York. More details for viewers will be shared in the future.

It sounds like we can expect to see both old and new Nintendo games alike in the upcoming event. Are you excited to see the championships return once again? And will you be competing? Let us know how your journeys to become Nintendo World Champions go in the comments below!
