While Sonic Mania was met with heavy critical acclaim last year, Sonic Forces didn't perform as well as some hoped. The game suffered from simple level design, stiff controls, and a lack of clear direction. Many fans consider it to be a step back from the popular Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors games.

This recent disappointment from SEGA has led some people to believe that the company might be better off leaving the development of future Sonic titles in the hands of fans, much like Mania. It worked really well for the 2D Sonic games, and this recent project from YouTuber Hero shows that a 3D game with the same idea wouldn't be half bad.

This awesome video shows off some of the work Hero has put into his Sonic game. All of the familiar elements from the series are here, including the homing attack, boosting system, and even Wisp powerups. The demonstration is extremely bare-bones, but it shows a lot of promise.

It seems to run on the engine Sonic Generations was created in or, at the very least, use similar assets. Some of the powerups are already functional, like laser, burst, and drill. Even so, this shows off all of the things fans love about 3D Sonic, and after Mania's success, I'm sure we can all get behind the idea of a 3D fan-created Sonic game.

What do you guys think of this demo? What would you like to see from the next 3D title in the series? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
