Yesterday a series of listings on Walmart's online store in Canada seemingly revealed numerous previously unannounced games. With E3 just around the corner, it appeared that they jumped the gun and made some listings public that should have stayed private for another month. Walmart has since responded to the incident, which they claim hasn't really spoiled anything.
Walmart's official statement on the issue calls it a glitch in the system. More importantly though, they claim it wasn't really a leak. The listed games (including Just Cause 4, Borderlands 3, Rage 2, Lego DC Villains, Gears of War 5, a new Splinter Cell, and a new Assassin's Creed) are not based on insider information, according to Walmart. Instead, we're told they were just "speculative." Anika Malik, director of corporate affairs for Walmart Canada, told Motherboard the following in an email.
"Walmart experienced a technical glitch that allowed certain items to be posted to our website for a short period of time. The items posted were speculative in nature and only game publishers can confirm the announcement of a release. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Like the gaming community, Walmart looks forward with anticipation to those announcements." — Anika Malik
It's possible that Walmart was genuinely just creating various placeholders based on speculation, but they may also just be doing damage control here. Either way, we look forward to seeing what E3 has to offer.
