Mario recently made a surprise appearance at the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and it was later revealed that Nintendo paid nothing to be a part of the show.

I suggest that Nintendo and the Tokyo Olympic committee should make an arrangement where rather than creating yet another round of bland, quickly-forgotten Olympic mascots, they should use the cast of the Mario games. If Nintendo wants to position themselves as an entertainment icon, there's possibly no better move.

Ben adds that another powerful move they could make is airing Super Bowl commercials, like The Pokémon Company did recently, though that would indeed cost a pretty penny.
