The Pokémon anime is getting a new twist for the Sun and Moon series: Ash is going to off school in the new season, as he sets his sights on Alola with a goal of graduating from school. They released a trailer for it, and it appears the visual style is getting quite the facelift, as well.
This was one of the talking points on this week's episode of Nintendo Week, our Nintendo-themed podcast here at Gamnesia, and we don't think it's as bad as people have made it out to be. Check out the discussion video above for our full thoughts, or keep reading below for a brief, brief summary.
The animation looks just fine, and the new take on the Pokémon world could work for Alola. As Ben points out, it's in fact a great premise to tell many different kinds of stories for young viewers, as Ash can have experiences both in and outside the classroom and sail out to more typical Pokémon-style adventures in Alola's many islands.
The aesthetic and the schoolyard premise both remind Alex and I of Yo-kai Watch, whose popularity in Japan has undoubtedly inspired The Pokémon Company to take this new direction for the show.
